The "Coptharrow" Griffon Bruxellois The Property of Mrs C. Morgan, the Coptharrow Kennels, Arbrook, Esher, Surrey
The amalgamation, some three years ago, of the Copthorne and Restharrow Kennels (when Mrs, Morgan bought the "Copthornes" from Lady Spicer and the two became known as the Coptharrows),brought with it the real hard work, anxieties, and disappointments that are inseparable from the large and varying interests. Despite the ravages of distemper and the difficulties with labour, Mrs. Morgan has never given up heart, and has this year had the signal success of making Red Rouge of Coptharrow the first rough dog champion since the war. This beautiful little dog is distinguished by his soundness, short back, perfect movement, and almost faultless head. He is a keen little sire, and several puppies to his credit will be benched next year, including Cute of Coptharrow, a puppy only 5 months old. A second lovely small stud dog is Kyps of Coptharrow, he is a cobby, sturdy little chap, with the broadest, flattest muzzle, large eyes and skull, and short back. So far he has refused to move in the ring on the lead, and in the future will probably been seen "not for competition". He has proved himself as a sure stockgetter, and as a son of Rushford Cliquot, is the only representative of a very fine strain, unfortunately almost lost in Mrs. Crokenden´s retirement from breeding. Kys´s dam is Plain Jane of Coptharrow, belies, her name, owing as she does, a perfect head, turnup and finish, failing in her somewhat sad-coloured coat, and with the longer back of a useful brood bitch. Ch Copthorne Pick O´the Pack is still siring healthy puppies, and Mrs. Morgan has hope that a youngster now coming on may prove a worthy successor of this wonderful veteran.
Copthorne Virago is about to do her bit for the kennel with puppies sired by Kyps. Copthorne Patricia, Copthorne Belladonna and Coptharrow Cara (the latter sided by Biffin of Causeway) are representative bitches of the finest type and breeding.
During the year under review Mrs. Morgan has sent two bitches to found a kennel in Washington, USA for which a good stud is also on order; and Cartain Price has commenced in Guernsey with two bitches sired by Ch Red Rogue, one of which, although only six months old, has won each time shown. The well known Bad Lad of Copthorne has gone to Mrs. Adamson in Kilcreggan, accompanied by a bitch puppy of Ch Red Rogue.
Mrs. Morgan is always pleased to afford any possible help to newcomers in the breed, as she considers the Griffon are not advancing in public knowledge as they deserve to. They are, perhaps the only "Toy dogs" that appeal to the male element of the household, their common sense and sporting qualities raising them far above the ordinary "lap dog" into real live companions, either ratting in the farm yard, rambling in the country side, or, in a pocket edition with a quaint monkey face, giving interest to my lady´s motor-car.
